Vendors status

  • ESRI
    • An international supplier of geographic information system (GIS) software, web GIS and geodatabase management applications. They produce the software 'ArcGIS Desktop', and are members of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data.
    • Status: ??

  • EnviroAtlas
    • Created by the EPA, EnviroAtlas is a web-based tool that combines maps, analysis tools, and interpretive information on ecosystem services.
    • Status: Call scheduled to discuss using EPA data to develop initial mock-up

  • GeoNode
    • Probably the most well established geospatial data collaboration platform that's built around open standards and open source is GeoNode and it is used by the US State Department, UN, EU, World Bank, etc - http://geonode.org/gallery/

  • MapBox
    • Like Esri, MapBox is a member of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data and has offered their tools to support SDG NRP platforms
    • Status: not contacted yet
  • Carto
    • While Carto may not be a member of the partnership, it was once a part of Vizzuality which is a member and both have a long history of working on projects like SDG NRP platforms.

  • Boundless
    • The primary company maintaining the open source GIS stack widely used by governments, NGO's, and others
    • Status: not contacted yet
  • OGC
    • The main body for setting interoperable open standards for GIS (I also believe non-OGC standards are worthy of consideration)

Open-source libraries considered

  • D3
    • D3.js is a vector-based, general-purpose data visualization library. Here is a choropleth example. Worth noting: D3 is a very popular data-vis library with a strong following, and is the subject of many courses/tutorials/books.
