Annotating

Manifest-type Collections and Items (which are not annotations themselves) can be annotated in either of the following ways:

Method 1: The "Annotate" link on the admin listing entry of an Omeka Collection or Omeka Item.

Method 2: The "Annotate" button on the admin page of a Omeka Collection or Omeka Item.

When the annotator appears, the annotation tools should appear by default (can be toggled on and off with the icon). To make a new annotation:

  • Select one of the five annotation tool types (rectangle, ellipse, freehand, polygon, pin) and draw the region on the canvas.
  • Enter the annotation text in the box that appears. You can also apply tags to the annotation to facilitate searching and organization, each separated by a space.
  • Select "Save" to submit your annotation. This will create an annotation-type Omeka Item.

Individual Annotations

The body text of an annotation is fully searchable and will appear in search results as a clickable entry. The tags can also be viewed and searched in the “Tag” tab.

When an annotation is accessed, it can be viewed and manipulated just like any other Omeka Item (except for being annotated itself). The embedded Mirador viewer will display the annotation on its own, in the context of the image it annotates.
