  1. Discussion of upcoming presentation on CDMI exports/imports

David S. gave brief overview of CDMI namespace management (CDMI exports and imports).

Goal is to provide information about use cases, and how CDMI helps solve these use cases.

Use cases include:

  • NAS share management/SAN volume management
  • Cloud API access management

CSTI outline:

Developed outline below:

- Namespaces overview/Background
- Where do namespaces apply? industry evolution
- Challenges and limitations with proprietary namespace management
- Lack of portability between platforms
- Using CDMI to build simple namespace management
- 5 use cases on namespace management
 - Viewing namespaces
 - Exporting namespaces
 - Cross-protocol exporting of namespaces
 - Configuration and access control of exported namespaces
 - Importing namespaces

- Action item: Diane will send calendar placeholder for live and dry run dates
- Action item: David will draft introductory webinar abstract paragraph by the end of this week

Gary M. We really should put together a product sheet for CDMI listing the primary features. This would help us create other articles.

Overlap with S3 is "S3 export" - See:

Immediate goal is a presentation, a white paper is something we could create later.

Examples:

  • I have a namespace, and I want to be able to view the contents of the namespace(s). This could just be showing a Linux filesystem via CDMI.
  • I want to export a specific subset of the namespace via a specific protocol (e.g. NFS, SMB, S3, etc). This could be configuring standard Linux servers.
  • I want to export a specific subset of the namespace via multiple protocols. Variation on the above.
  • I want to specify configuration parameters for exporting from a namespace (e.g. configure NFS parameters).
  • I want to import a namespace (NFS, S3 via FUSE, etc)
    • Currently handled by CDMI as "references", but a formal "import" metadata on a container may be useful.

Having a working demo would be ideal, but our primary goal is to show the interface.

Next steps:

  • David S. will with with Diane to firm up presentation agenda
  • David S. and Gary M. will look at potential tools/libraries that can be used for a quick demo

Would be useful to get some more resources to do this for multiples where CDMI provides value. Outside funding would be helpful there.

Review items:

  • Need to work on listing of supported schemas, and how they are specified.
  • Do we need to do anything with error reporting beyond specifying a place where the results go?
