Meeting Minutes, 2023-06-23

Addition of discussion topic around standardization of S3 as a object data access protocol.

  1. New: standardization of S3 as a object data access protocol

Gregory asked for an update on the uptake and adoption of CDMI.

David presented on position in the industry, standard maturity, government adoption (US, UK, IT), internal corporate use.

David presented on industry participation in the TWG, extension process.

Gregory presented on the opportunity to assist with the standardization of S3 as a data access protocol.

This has come up before, and the challenge has been finding participants willing to contribute time and resources.

Challenges include:

  • No formal protocol specification
  • Fragmentary conformance testing suites
  • Many implementations with incompatibilities and differences in interpretations
  • Undocumented bugs that implementations must be compatible with
  • Differences between implementations and documentation

One approach could be a proxy that sits between a S3 client and an S3 server that validates request and response bodies.

A quick review of the Cloud TWG charter supports this work ("The TWG will identify, develop, and document both Data Path and Control Path interfaces and protocols as SNIA Architecture to enable interoperable Cloud Storage.")

David will reach out to Arnold to get the most current version of the TWG charter.

Next steps would be to get on the SNIA TC agenda to discuss this as a work item.

Greg was unable to attend this meeting, so this topic was deferred to next meeting.
