Platform license
EOP is released under the terms of General Public License (GPL) version 3.
Please note that if you are going to contribute to the EXCITEMENT Open Platform (EOP) you should accept this license policy:
We reserve the right to redistribute the GPL release with modifications under the terms of another license (either Apache v2.0 or LGPL v3 or any other similar license agreement) at a later time without prior notification and permit from the contributors.
The platform can be configured to use different pipelines to process the data sets (e.g. OpenNLP) and different tools and resources (e.g. WordNet) to annotate entailment relations. Pipelines, tools, and resources can have licences that are compatible or not compatible with General Public License (GPL) version 3 according to the tables below:
Lib=library, Resource=additional resources (knowledge resources, parsers, tools, etc.)
Table 1: GPL-v3-incompatible ones:
No. | Item | Lib/Resource | License | Usecase/Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | GermaNet | Resource | It's own license | Similar to the English (Princeton) WordNet, provides entailment rules for German |
2 | TextPro | Resource | It's own license | NLP analysis for English and Italian |
3 | TreeTagger | Resource (tool) | It's own license (The copyright owner, Helmut Schmid, has permitted the EXCITEMENT project to redistribute the binaries with the EOP.) | German Processing |
4 | JWKTL | lib |
http://www.ukp.tu-darmstadt.de/software/jwktl At the moment, JWKTL is not GPL-compatible, as it is not available as open-source software. However, we plan to release the software soon (possibly in July/August?). So far, we planned to use the Apache License, which would (as far as I know) allow using JWKTL in your GPL software. Please also study the license of the Berkeley DB, which is being used by JWKTL and might imply transitive conditions. Should be no problem though, but still needs consideration" (Christian Meyer) |

5 | Lingpipe | lib |
http://alias-i.com/lingpipe/web/licensing.html “It is not considered to be GPL-v3 compatible but we will very likely adopt the AGPL in the near future. If there is a good reason to move more quickly let me know. I expect within the next 60 days.” (Breck Baldwin) |

7 | jni-svmlight | lib |
http://morphix-nlp.berlios.de/manual/node48.html “the code is not GPL. But it is free for research and teaching” (Thorsten Yoachim)" |

8 | CatVar | Resource | According to Mr. Nizar Habash’s reply, the license is going to soon change to GPLv-3 compatible. Previous (and current) license: Open Software License version 1.1 (Mutual Termination for Patent Action: This License shall terminate automatically and You may no longer exercise any of the rights granted to You by this License if You file a lawsuit in any court alleging that any OSI Certified open source software that is licensed under any license containing this “Mutual Termination for Patent Action” clause infringes any patent claims that are essential to use that software.) | Uninflected words (lemmas) and their categorical (i.e., part-of-speech) variants |

32 | JWI | lib |
http://projects.csail.mit.edu/jwi/license.html “JWI is free to use for all purposes (commercial or otherwise), doesn’t rely on any 3rd party libraries, and all the source code is available. It’s licensed under Creative Commons CC-BY, which to my understanding only requires users to grant credit where credit is due; it allows derivative works and commercial use at no charge. I think this fits with GPL, but, again, I’m not a lawyer. I will certainly not complain if you use JWI in your project, whatever it is, as long as you credit me for JWI.” (Mark Finlayson) |

34 | Morph-Adorner | lib |
http://morphadorner.northwestern.edu/morphadorner/licenses/ The principal license for MorphAdorner is the NCSA license. This license is based on the terms of the Expat and modified BSD licenses. It is a lax, permissive non-copyleft free software license, compatible with the GNU GPL. On the other hand, many of the libraries used by MorphAdorner have their own licenses as noted on that page as well: http://morphadorner.northwestern.edu/morphadorner/licenses/#thirdpartylicenses |
