Every feature is an experiment.
-- Laurie Williams

  • Programmers think they are building one system
  • Great engineers know they are always checking current choices while (sometimes) exploring the alternatives.

Software Engineering is the process of the design, construction and maintenance of good enough software, given the available resources. SE is an experimental discipline where engineers are always testing trade offs between what they want and what they need and what they've got. It is easy to check if you are working with such an engineer: just ask them to make and justify well-informed decisions about trade-offs in software engineering.
