UGWA goes poof

UGWA will stop receiving updates starting next year because the maintainers graduated.

We don’t feel like continuing to maintain the app from college, and we’ll probably soon lose touch with the new Gunn student body. For example, if Gunn introduces a new EGO program that’s like extra SELF for unpatriotic students, we would have no idea what that is and wouldn’t bother integrating it into UGWA.

Just in case, we will transfer ownership of UGWA to current Gunn students. However, several students including me have conducted a thorough review of UGWA’s code and concluded that it sucks. A freshman wrote most of the original code, using dated techniques from dated tutorials, all of which has been rotting under layers and layers of poorly organised code added throughout the years. Instead, students have made their own modern Gunn schedule apps. It makes for an interesting programming project and also allows for some new and innovative ideas, like Schoology integration.

We also want to make it very clear that UGWA is deprecated. Back in ye olde days, TheGunnApp was the dominant app, but when its developers graduated, they left their app on in the app stores, confusing parents and students looking up a Gunn app when they expected it to be accurate and up to date. We don’t want that to happen to UGWA.
