confirmed that this works perfectly on heroku, so why use old/outdated node versions ...

This pull request is to allow new developers to use the latest features available on heroku ... it sucks having new apps use node 0.6 when 0.8 is alive and kicking on heroku.

Makes sense, although I would maybe prefer a third option that I do not know yet. I don't prefer rebuilt things in version control personally. Thanks for the link.

I updated the pull request (no longer removing the node_modules).

For the world of non-Git-based deployment there's npm shrinkwrap, which is frequently cited as an alternative.
