per the issue, gradle 8.2 complains about this. fixes com.diffplug.eclipse.apt plugin causes deprecation warnings on Gradle 8.2 #207
i was inspired by https://stackoverflow.com/questions/50860095/how-to-configure-gradle-java-plugin-from-a-custom-gradle-plugin and https://docs.gradle.org/current/javadoc/org/gradle/api/tasks/GroovySourceSet.html
this project still internally refers to "Convention" but that work seems out of scope of this specific issue (which is to fix the deprecation issues). i'll follow up to see if that work need to be done.
