  1. Fix compilation errors with the recent gcc 

    Make the code compile on the recent gcc. The patch
does following things:

  - Adopt to the new libcheck api. The old ones like
  fail, fail_if, fail_unless are deprecated and can't
  compile on the recent gcc.
  - Other format-string related fixes like unmatched
  types.
