VirtualCoffee.io is an inclusive community of people in tech committed to supporting each other through every stage of their journey. Our mission is to be a welcoming tech community that allows room for growth and mentorship at all levels and to create meaningful opportunities for learning, leadership, and contribution for everyone. Virtual Coffee is, and always will be, a genuine community of people who value and prioritize supporting one another. We know that growth comes at all levels and that you can teach and learn no matter what stage of the developer journey you're on.
Since our first Coffee in April 2020, our free online tech community has grown to support developers at all stages of the journey. With years of accumulated wisdom from regular meetups and conversations about both the human and technical aspects of the tech world, we have quite a bit of knowledge that can be created into a set of comprehensive guides.
- We use a person-first approach.
- We let intimacy, empathy, and respect inform our decisions.
- We create and support positive and inclusive community.
- We work to remove tech barriers.
- We believe everyone has the ability to teach and learn, and that collaboration of developers at all stages enriches our community.
- We meet people where they are, make space for everyone, and encourage the exchange and exploration of new ideas to create close relationships.
- We believe in a growth-mindset and encourage and create meaningful opportunities for learning and mentorship, creating a closer community through participation, leadership, and contributions.
- We value synchronous communication and events as a medium that encourages all of the above and enriches asynchronous experiences.
Despite the wealth of informal knowledge shared within the VirtualCoffee.io community, there lacks a centralized, structured repository of guides and resources. Members and the broader tech community could greatly benefit from easy access to the collective wisdom gathered over the years, particularly in areas such as career development, technical skills enhancement, public speaking, and mental health awareness. The absence of these structured resources is a missed opportunities for learning and growth, particularly progress in tech careers and personal development.
The project will involve:
- Cataloging existing notes and discussions to identify key topics and themes.
- Engaging with the Resources Maintainer and community to prioritize content development based on collective needs and gaps in available resources.
- Creating beginner-friendly, accessible guides that encompass a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
- Networking and job searching strategies.
- Interview preparation and navigating job offers.
- Technical tutorials and best practices.
- Public speaking and community engagement.
- Managing mental health and work-life balance in tech.
- Ensuring all guides are inclusive and consider the diverse backgrounds and needs of tech community members.
- Developing a sustainable, easy-to-navigate repository on the VirtualCoffee.io website for these resources.
- Soliciting feedback from community members for continuous improvement of the guides.
- Technical Writing experience, writing for a broad audience
- Familiarity with technical concepts
- Familiarity with GitHub workflow
- Technical Writer
- Mentor/Project Advisor
- Software Engineer
- Video Editor
Success metrics will include:
- Increased engagement with the guide repository, as measured by website analytics.
- Positive feedback from community members and external users.
- An increase in contributions to the guides from the community.
- Issues and discussions created by the community regarding topics they'd like to see as resources.
- Usage of the guides in supporting monthly challenges and other VirtualCoffee.io initiatives.
- Phase 1 (Months 1-2): Project planning and community engagement for topic prioritization.
- Phase 2 (Months 3-4): Initial development of guides and creation of the repository framework.
- Phase 3 (Months 5-6): Review, testing with community members, and incorporation of feedback.
- Phase 4 (Month 7): Official launch of the guide repository and promotion within and beyond the VirtualCoffee.io community.
- Content Creation & Editing: $10,000
- Website Development for Repository: $1,000
- Community Engagement and Feedback Incentives: $500
- Video Editing: $2,000
- Total Estimated Budget: $13,500
