"pinta-pintura" because "pintura" means "painting", and I added a painting:

Yes, that's the dog from the pinta-project homepage, and, yes, this is extremely rough.

I didn't include the tube of paint because there wasn't really a tidy way of fitting it in the layout.

The frame and the paintbrush could probably stand to be larger relative to the icon canvas.

Also, I'm not terribly wedded to this, or anything. This is just an idea for how to center the icon's design around one of the preapproved silhouettes:

I do like a lot of this, using the rectangular frame to create a paint canvas is actually brilliant, and of course there's the attention to detail to shading and the dog is a simple but striking design that I think works well. If Pinta was just starting I could imagine this being a great choice.

It's worth opening a PR in the upstream repo to discuss opertunities with Pinta themselves here, similar to Joplin I'd have to be careful to not change branding to a significant degree, and with Pinta being such a longstanding application that's been around for nearly a decade, it'll also be in repositories that might not be updated for years. It could be really confusing for users as a result and I'd really have to let upstream make the calls here.

This might also be worth mentioning on the Pinta mailing list

I do like the icon - I'm not too familiar with the icon guidelines, but it might be nice to have more blue for consistency with the old icon's blue tube of paint?
It is a large change in branding, but might be appropriate to go along with a major release like the GTK3 version
