Dragon Software Information and Troubleshooting
Currently we are using v13.00.000.071 on a Windows 10 machine, v10.0.14393 in our testing environment
- IE: Dragon dictation should work natively with internet explorer to input text into our editor. To navigate the web using browser elements, you may need to download an extension, which can be found here. Currently we do not use an IE extension, but users who find themselves using one should let us know what desired behavior necessitated the installation, and what version of the extension they've installed.
- Chrome: Dragon requires a chrome extension in order to work effectively. Our team has had issues with the Dragon extension found in the chrome store and our application. Currently, we use an archived copy of the Dragon extension v15.0.0.58 on crx.dam.io. To learn more on installing, see the section below labeled "Problem: Extension incompatibility". For those looking for the version found in the chrome store, you can find install instructions here.
These are the only two browsers we have done considerable testing on. Users who find themselves using browsers not listed here should let us know if they run into any issues by lodging an issue on our GitHub page here.
Some users (the devs included) have had issues with Dragon not understanding them particularly well, especially when using domain-specific language (e.g. referring to specific names of drugs or clinical trials). The solution we've had success with is creating a user profile, going through the training involved in the setup of that profile, feeding Dragon domain-specific files on which it can train itself to recognize new terms in bulk, and training dragon in particular on some tricky words.
- To create a profile: Follow the guide laid out on Dragon's website [here(https://www.nuance.com/products/help/dragon/dragon-for-pc/enx/professionalgroup/main/Content/Users/working_with_user_profiles.htm).
- To teach dragon terms using text-based files: Follow the guide laid out on Dragon's website here, specifically under the section titled "Adding words and phrases from specific documents".
- To teach dragon specific terms: Follow the guide laid out on Dragon's website here, specifically under the section titled "To add words and phrases in the Add word or phrase dialog box".
Chrome extensions seem to auto-update, which can result in Dragon's input mechanism in future versions (e.g. v15.2....) not playing well with our note editor. The solution to this is to find an archived version of the old extension that we know works, to uninstall the incompatible version, and to install the recently downloaded, archived version.
- Chrome Extension/v15.2.0.4 with Dragon/v13.00.000.071
- Chrome Extension/v15.0.0.58 with Dragon/v13.00.000.071
- Finding archived extension: Users can find archived versions of the Dragon extension on crx.dam.io. As of 2/22/2018 we know that v15.0.0.58 of the Chrome extension is compatible with v13.00.000.071 of Dragon. That file will download a '.zip' file, but it is actually a '.crx' file, a chrome extension. You need to rename the file accordingly.
- Uninstall old version: Visit (chrome://extensions)[chrome://extensions] in your Chrome browser to see a list of the extensions downloaded on the Google user account. Delete any older versions of Dragon Web Extension.
- Install recently downloaded: You can drag and drop the renamed file (e.g. '15.0.0.58.crx') into the list of Chrome extensions referenced in the above bullet. If this doesn't work, feel free to lodge an issue on our GitHub page here or reach out to developers directly.
