Crawler Basics

The crawler has one or more engines. These engines generate power which in turn fills the capacitors, or batteries. Energy from the batteries are used to fix shield damage, use certain modules, move the crawler, or similar things.

Life support requires energy too, if just a little in comparison. However, if there is no fuel, and no energy in the batteries, life support will fail.

Custom Crawler Design

The crawlers should be customizable with different modules like weapons, engine types, shield generators and so on. The modules should have different energy usage, mass that impedes movement, and other characteristics. Perhaps some more exotic modules too, like mass repulsors that pushes rockets away or stealth field generators.

Choice of Weapons

I'm not sure if it's a good or bad idea to include super high-tech weapons, but it would also add to the range of tactical choices if there are weapons that use battery energy instead of physical ammunition.

More conventional weapons are a given, like rocket propelled warheads, cannons, mines and so on.

Crew

A feature to be added later on, the crawler is manned by a crew of varying skills. Marines help in boarding attacks, navigators aid maneuvering, gunner's skills affect accuracy of weapons, technicians keep the computer system in line and so on.

We could also take it further, with civilian people on board that needs to be protected as families of the crew.

You as the captain should also be present aboard the crawler. Don't die.
