Single node install doesn't work?

Description:
With a newly installed kubernetes cluster I have performed the steps:

• install "single node"
• modified the /etc/hosts file as instructed
  <ingress_ip> gateway.am.wso2.com
  <ingress_ip> am.wso2.com
  <ingress_ip> websub.am.wso2.com
• then attempted to use
  curl https://am.wso2.com/publisher -k
  curl https://gateway.am.wso2.com/publisher -k
  curl https://websub.am.wso2.com/publisher -k

Getting error 503

Is it possible the "simple" install could have broken with an update perhaps? I also tried cloning the git repo and installing using the source style install. I've been troubleshooting for a couple hours but I'm under the impression this should have resulted in a usable installation within just a couple minutes ... has anyone else tested the simple 'single node install' recently?
