I take it that it is not currently supported given the flood of Maven errors, but correct me if I am wrong.

What kind of issues? I can compile it fine with Java 8 and our pom.xml seems to specify Java 8 as compiler source and target. Could you send an example?

Ah sorry, I forgot to mention this is for the 1.7 branch.

Setting compiler to 1.8 in the pom.xml might be enough. But elasticsearch 1.7 is getting fairly old. You might want to upgrade...
