GZip compression is disabled, because it increases filesizes for JPEG-images, and it increases CPU-load on client and server. JPEG-compression is honored, and the default compression when requesting BMP-images (they are converted to JPEG). If you want to modify compression for JPEG-images, you can do so by setting the &q= parameter.
