URL: https://www.facebook.com/howtogeek

Browser / Version: Firefox 110.0
Operating System: Windows 10
Tested Another Browser: Yes Chrome

Problem type: Site is not usable
Description: Page not loading correctly
Steps to Reproduce:
Facebook displays "This page isn't available at the moment
This may be because of a technical error that we're working to fix. Please try reloading this page."

Works fine in Chrome. Worked fine before Firefox update and latest Windows 10 update (which happened at the same time).

Of course, Facebook's programming quality and apparent server bandwidth leaves a lot to be desired. It is often slow to respond and takes ages to load pages, but usually gets there without consistent errors.

Console log shows:

  • Error: The operation failed for reasons unrelated to the database itself and not covered by any other error code.

  • ErrorUtils caught an error:
    CSR upgrades included unknown rsrcIndex 571 (client rev: 1006968546, cohort: HYP:comet_pkg).

Another site is failing for the same reason: https://boardgamearena.com/

Same error: The operation failed for reasons unrelated to the database itself and not covered by any other error code.

Looks like quite a severe failure in the latest FF update, and it needs to be rolled back ASAP.

Though as I said there was a Windows update too (but can't imagine that would affect it too much, given that I'm on Windows 10, which doesn't have any feature updates apart from the unwarranted deliberate crippling of iexplore.exe and redirecting requests to "Edge").

I tried a downgrade.

That used up more time than I expected to spend, due to your idiotic UX. See attached.

Seems that with the downgrade the above sites worked fine.

But it was impossible to test with my profile, because you prevent a profile from a future version being used.

I don't like Chrome, but if I don't get these types of upgrade issues, I'll probably switch to it.

Please revert the 110.0 upgrade ASAP. It is broken.

Please test your software and upgrade process more thoroughly in future, and also allow roll-backs with a copy of a profile - as opposed to refusing to start the app.

No response? This is urgent. You need to fix this within a matter of hours. Otherwise users will have a completely broken Firefox. And they can't roll back - see above.

With hindsight, I wish I had disabled automatic updates.

We appreciate your report but I was not able to reproduce this issue. I was able to log into my account and browse the content without encountering problems.

Tested on:
• Browser / Version: Firefox Release 110
• Operating System: Windows 10

Suggestions:
• Clear cache/data/cookies, disable Ad-blocker (if available), or use a clean profile and check again
• If there are any changes made to the default settings of the browser (e.g. in about:config), please revert to the default settings

How to create a new/clean profile:

  1. Open a new tab
  2. Type in the address bar "about:profiles"
  3. Press "Enter"
  4. Click on "Create a New Profile"
  5. Click "Next"
  6. Name your profile
  7. Click "Finish"
  8. Head to your newly created profile
  9. Click "Launch profile in new browser"

I haven't got time for this. You have wasted too much of it already.

Please test your upgrade process more thoroughly in real-world environments, particularly if you encourage or default to automatic updates.

Secondary bug is the inability to downgrade, which you haven't addressed.

Could you also not please take the trouble to see where the error message "The operation failed for reasons unrelated to the database itself and not covered by any other error code" comes from, since it seems to be a Firefox error message, and provide a more informed response?

I am using Chrome now, and will only in future be using Firefox for testing,

Did you not read that?

I did but we are unable to help you with this issue unless you try on a clean profile and/or without addons. These kind of issues can happen on any browser. The old data might interfere with the new data which results in breaking the page.

I did but we are unable to help you with this issue unless you try on a clean profile and/or without addons.

I am trying to help you fix problems with Firefox.

The problem seems to be caused by an update/upgrade.

Therefore trying it on a clean profile won't get us anywhere.

If you continually refuse to answer the questions about diagnostic messages cited above, and provide any assistance in downgrading whilst retaining the profile, which Firefox point-blank refuses to do, then I cannot help you, and you are wasting my time.

@JakeQZ

JakeQZ commented Feb 16, 2023

Obviously I could start with new profile and it would probably work. But why should I? How will I get all my history imported? Will the same problem recur with a future Firefox update?

You're not helping yourself by attempting to deflect the issue.

I have asked some questions which you still have not answered.

@JakeQZ

JakeQZ commented Feb 16, 2023

These kind of issues can happen on any browser.

Not if properly implemented, and are not the fault of the host site.

The old data might interfere with the new data which results in breaking the page.

Surely not if it affects multiple sites and clearing the cache makes no difference.

@softvision-raul-bucata

@JakeQZ Thanks for pointing out the issue. Have you tried reproducing the issue in a new profile? If so, could you please post a screenshot/screen recording? A new profile will start without add-ons, cache, and history, but at the same time, in the old profile, all the Firefox data will be kept.

The operation failed for reasons unrelated to the database itself and not covered by any other error code.

Guess there's no danger of you taking the trouble to explain this error message?

And I guess this is not the right place to report bugs?

@softvision-raul-bucata
Copy link

@JakeQZ This is the right place to report bugs, but bugs that are reproducible in one browser, but not the other, regarding the page. If a bug reproduces with a specific add-on, or extension, there are always other places that we could re-direct you, if the culprit is found. I am certain that one of the add-ons you have installed is interfering with the page. What I would recommend is first disabling all the add-ons and see if the issue reproduces. If it does not (meaning that the culprit is one of the add-ons) you can - if time allows it- re-enabling the add-ons one by one, and see which one causes the issue. Once the add-on is identified, from there we either report the bug here : https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Toolkit&component=Add-ons%20Manager or directly to the owner of the add-on.

Which is why I ask where the error message is coming from and what is the reason behind it.

@softvision-raul-bucata
Copy link

@JakeQZ I can not say exactly where this message is coming from since I can not reproduce it. In theory, it comes from a denied request in the running code/function probably asynchronously executing its callback. The reason behind this is some corrupt data in your profile (caused by an add-on in this case). My suggestion will most likely find the culprit from the add-ons list.

Exactly, meaning that the same add-on or a different one is interfering with the site. That is the downside of some add-ons, they may cause corrupt data, throwing all kinds of errors.

May disappear with reboot. Doesn't mean it's not a bug in FF, particularly as it's been reported at least 3 times elsewhere.

Even if an addon is at play, FF should be more robust. From the above links it seems related to indexedDB.

I can shed a bit more light now.

My copied profile, whilst originally apparently working, then started suffering the same problem on the same sites.

Upon reboot, I saw 'scanning drive D: for errors'. Drive D: is a mechanical HDD and where my FF profiles are stored.

It is not yet clear whether the HDD is failing, or there is an OS/systemware bug introduced by the latest Windows update (which includes the hijacking of IEXPLORE.EXE to redirect users to Edge). FF and Windows were both updated at the same time.

If the FF error message was more descriptive, it would make it a lot easier to diagnose the problem.
