Unable to switch between "Spaces" (Desktops) on Virtual Screen

I actually bought Pro thinking "this is perfect!", but just a few minutes after went to switch to another desktop on the Virtual Screen only to find that it just made the Main screen switch instead.

I find that this behavior occurs when using either the two-finger swipe left/right on the Magic Mouse (my normal method), or when using the hotkey combination of ctrl + left/right arrow.

The only way I can switch successfully to another Space/Desktop on the Virtual Screen is to actually open Mission Control with the icon, and then move to that screen and click the desktop in the Spaces bar at the top of Mission Control. But this nearly defeats the purpose of multiple desktops and full screen apps if you can't switch between them quickly.

Question: why are you using virtual screen mirroring? If you want to get flexible HiDPI resolutions and your config supports it, it is better to use smooth scaling: https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/wiki/Fully-scalable-HiDPI-desktop

If virtual screen is a must then you can try streaming instead of mirroring.

I am wanting to use a larger/higher resolution that is scaled down to native the FHD of a second (lower resolution) monitor – end goal of smaller font, more workspace (accepting the reduced sharpness as a trade off). Is there a better method to achieve that?

No, except that you can use streaming instead of mirroring. With streaming this macOS bug does not happen as it specifically affects mirrored extended display sets involving not natively connected displays.
