We can resize the comment box to past the newsfeed area, which looks pretty corny

This can be fixed with the 'resize' CSS property on the textarea. Options are "vertical", "horizontal", "both", and "none". As is, the reply box isn't very wide. Maybe we could widen it, then use the resize: "vertical" property on it? That seems like the logical fix to me.
