5e23028 does not reproduce the crash, happens only in GUI

issue seems to be during gpd.readfile()

does not reproduce inside the QGIS python prompt neither

updating docs in 3c05040
I'm closing the issue for now as this seems to be related to fiona. temporary files can still be found, the only inconvenience is to restart QGIS.
