The Configuration Profiles extension provides a framework for handling configuration entities like XCM profiles are. It provides SearchKit- and FormBuilder-based UIs and makes profiles exportable via Managed Entities. This would allow for less custom code in XCM, exportable XCM profiles (and thus other extensions to bring their own), and configurable UIs.
