Future of xaps given the unavailability of OS X Server

I just renewed my certificates to use with xaps, using an old Mac running El Capitan and OS X Server. But keeping that old machine just for that purpose won't be sustainable long-term, and having it connected to my Apple account also prevents me from turning on Advanced Data Protection, and generally causes headaches.

What's the recommended path forward? How does everyone else do this?

I use a fork of this project. It renews the certificates by itself.
