Hello,

I'm trying to install sofa with sofaPython3 plugin in Ubuntu and I'm following the instructions given in this link https://www.sofa-framework.org/community/doc/getting-started/build/linux/.

I'm getting error that pybind11 is not installed.

But I have installed pybind11

Hi @Gopi-GK02,
It looks like you are mixing some conda installed dependencies (pybind11) and system wide installed ones (such as Sofa other dependencies such boost, eigen, Qt).
There are some Sofa and SofaPython3 conda packages currently in development. This will ease the installation for conda users. But keep in mind that for now, until the conda package is not released on conda-forge, conda is not officially supported.
You could try to follow the following steps for compiling Sofa & SofaPython3 in a conda environment if you wish. If so please read carefully all the instructions.
First, as a general good practice with conda, I strongly recommend to avoid as much as possible to mix system wide dependencies (apt packages) and conda ones. If you plan to use conda, then try to maximize the number of dependencies installed through conda. It will help a lot to avoid mixing dependencies and to divide properly your conda environments.
We will also use python 3.8 for the installation here, as it is the currently recommended version. So please be sure this is the current version of Python in your conda environment, so first:
conda install python=3.8
or if starting from a fresh conda environment with Python 3.8:
conda create -n <my_sofa_env> python python=3.8
Install Sofa dependencies:
conda install eigen boost-cpp zlib glew qt-main libqglviewer libglu libjpeg-turbo libpng -c conda-forge
as well as SofaPython3 dependencies:
conda install pybind11 -c conda-forge
You can then run cmake from your Sofa build folder:
cmake <sofa_source_dir> -DCMAKE_PREFIX_PATH=$CONDA_PREFIX -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$CONDA_PREFIX -DPLUGIN_SOFAPYTHON3=ON -DPython_EXECUTABLE=$CONDA_PREFIX/bin/python where <sofa_source_dir> is your Sofa sources directory. You did mention it, but I assume you've checked out the v23.06 release of Sofa. If not, please do so.
The CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH variable will make look for all the dependencies within your current conda environment, and the CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX will make install Sofa (if you do so) within this environment. We here have to force the Python version to the 3.8 of your conda environment with the Python_EXECUTABLE as with your conda installation, you typically have several Python versions installed, and the cmake package for Python has the annoying default behavior to look for the highest version available on your system, which is not what we want.
I strongly discourage the use of cmake-gui here, as for some reasons it seams not able to resolve the given environment variables given as an argument (at least in my setup), despite the fact I admit it is a convenient tool to show all available options. You could still first run the first cmake configure with this cmake command, and then call cmake-gui to check visually all the variables.
Also check carefully you cmake output and especially look for the lines:

-- Python:
    Version: 3.8.17
    Executable: [...]
    Headers: [...]
    Libraries: [...]
    User site: [...]
-- pybind11:
    Version: 2.11.1
    Config: [...]

You should have all the [...] paths pointing to files in your conda environment, and for Python to a 3.8 version.

Edit: I've just seen that your Python installation detected by your cmake is not the one from your conda environment, so you will likely go into trouble mixing a conda pybind11 package and non-conda Python install. Following the previous instructions should solve your problem.

In my case, simply providing the CMake variable pybind11_DIR is enough.
