I don't have Eclipse anymore, but didn't it automatically expand the current word at the caret as the selection to quick find next? Perhaps it was an option I used to turn on in settings.
Regardless, without selecting text, Quick Find remains inert when pressing Alt-G. It would be useful I think if it automatically expanded the current word as text to Quick Find next.

@bbottema, Eclipse does not "automatically expand the current word at the caret". The Find Next/Previous behavior in Eclipse can be completely described in one sentence: "Find the next or previous occurrence of the selected text". There is no additional complexity.
