When the shim_client crashes, it does not crash the tool

the shim_tool crashing / failing does not raise alert / error to the tool. this is probably because it happens in another thread and it just crashes that thread.

do it safely. i wasted like 4 hours running an experiment with a bug in the code that caused the shim_client to crash but the experiment continued scanning, but without actually setting the shim loop currents...
