While that's a good idea, I'm not sure if that definitely should be a tooltip: it'll have bad discoverability (almost impossible to guess that it will show up if you aren't already suspect that multiple users have the same names) and troubles with touch devices.

I'd offer an alternate solution: what if we'll show nicknames for such users in a more light color ahead of their messages? We have a plenty of space there anyway.

Here's s proposed mockup:

After that, we could add an option to always show these usernames.

Also we should take into account that some of the users have no public username. What should we do about them? Probably show their user ids instead?
