source: docs

Creating the Certificate Authorities

Run All commands below only on Controller Node or Deployer Node

Run commands with Regular users (non-root)

1. Create Working Directory

cd ~
mkdir certs
chmod 700 certs
cd certs

2. Create openssl.cnf Configuration file

nano openssl.cnf
# OpenSSL root CA configuration file.

[ ca ]
# `man ca`
default_ca = CA_default

[ CA_default ]
# Directory and file locations.
dir               = ./
certs             = $dir/certs
crl_dir           = $dir/crl
new_certs_dir     = $dir/newcerts
database          = $dir/index.txt
serial            = $dir/serial

# The root key and root certificate.
private_key       = $dir/private/ca.key.pem
certificate       = $dir/certs/ca.cert.pem

# For certificate revocation lists.
crlnumber         = $dir/crlnumber

cert_opt          = ca_default
default_days      = 3650
preserve          = no
policy            = policy_strict

[ policy_strict ]
# The root CA should only sign intermediate certificates that match.
# See the POLICY FORMAT section of `man ca`.
countryName             = match

keyUsage = critical, digitalSignature, keyEncipherment
extendedKeyUsage = serverAuth

[ crl_ext ]
# Extension for CRLs (`man x509v3_config`).
authorityKeyIdentifier=keyid:always

3. Make directories for the two certificate authorities

mkdir client_ca
mkdir server_ca

4. Octavia Ca Password

Grep the octavia ca pass from passwords.yml

grep octavia_ca_password /etc/kolla/passwords.yml

octavia_ca_password: PtCvO4S5eBzOF5aarH7vPRWYCEkyvzuy2gVhL1Oh

Use this password if a password is requested when creating a certificate

5. Starting with the server certificate authority, prepare the CA.

cd server_ca
mkdir certs crl newcerts private
chmod 700 private
touch index.txt
echo 1000 > serial

Create the server CA key.

openssl genrsa -aes256 -out private/ca.key.pem 4096
chmod 400 private/ca.key.pem

Create the server CA certificate.

openssl req -config ../openssl.cnf -key private/ca.key.pem -new -x509 -days 7300 -sha256 -extensions v3_ca -out certs/ca.cert.pem

6. Moving to the client certificate authority, prepare the CA.

cd ../client_ca
mkdir certs crl csr newcerts private
chmod 700 private
touch index.txt
echo 1000 > serial

Create the client CA key.

openssl genrsa -aes256 -out private/ca.key.pem 4096
chmod 400 private/ca.key.pem

Create the client CA certificate.

openssl req -config ../openssl.cnf -key private/ca.key.pem -new -x509 -days 7300 -sha256 -extensions v3_ca -out certs/ca.cert.pem

Create a key for the client certificate to use.

openssl genrsa -aes256 -out private/client.key.pem 2048

Create the certificate request for the client certificate used on the controllers.

openssl req -config ../openssl.cnf -new -sha256 -key private/client.key.pem -out csr/client.csr.pem

Sign the client certificate request.

openssl ca -config ../openssl.cnf -extensions usr_cert -days 7300 -notext -md sha256 -in csr/client.csr.pem -out certs/client.cert.pem

Create a concatenated client certificate and key file.

openssl rsa -in private/client.key.pem -out private/client.cert-and-key.pem
cat certs/client.cert.pem >> private/client.cert-and-key.pem

7. Copy Certificate to kolla config directory

cd ..
sudo mkdir -p /etc/kolla/config/octavia
sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /etc/kolla/config
cp client_ca/certs/ca.cert.pem /etc/kolla/config/octavia/client_ca.cert.pem
cp server_ca/certs/ca.cert.pem /etc/kolla/config/octavia/server_ca.cert.pem
cp server_ca/private/ca.key.pem /etc/kolla/config/octavia/server_ca.key.pem
cp client_ca/private/client.cert-and-key.pem /etc/kolla/config/octavia/client.cert-and-key.pem
cd ~
