Checklist

  • I made sure that there are no existing issues - open or closed - which I could contribute my information to.
  • I'm aware that this is a request for NewPipe itself and that requests for adding a new service need to be made at NewPipeExtractor.
  • I have taken the time to fill in all the required details. I understand that the feature request will be dismissed otherwise.
  • This issue contains only one feature request.
  • I have read and understood the contribution guidelines.

Feature description

Plz add login/signin option with Google so we can like, comments on video

Why do you want this feature?

It will be useful

Why ist the feature relevant to this fork?

Newpipe doesn't have Google signin/Login option. So it will be great if you add it

IIRC @polymorphicshade was planning on doing that anyways.

I personally don't really like the idea. Not only because I use NewPipe to minimise Google exposure while still being able to watch YT but also because this is a large technical challenge. Google doesn't want 3rd party apps to log into YT and will likely try to prevent it. We can't win against that.
We may be able to for a short while but from then on it becomes a cat-and-mouse game.

It might not be that impossible since µG is able to provide a large portion of GMS with Google connection but I'm still not a fan of that idea personally.

This is a planned feature, though it will be pretty minimal in implementation. The goal is to maintain the privacy upstream NewPipe delivers, with the optional ability to attach a login cookie to import subs and get video recommendations.

Please don't add a login function. The disadvantages outweigh the advantages by far. I like NewPipe, because it is privacy friendly and don't send unnecessary information to Google. By adding a login function, this would be the opposite of privacy, just to write comments and like/dislike a video? Additionally, with every further change from the original repo, it will get harder and harder to pull upstream fixes and patching them.
I like NewPipe how it is, but use this App, since I miss SponsorBlock and the dislike count. Why don't focus on those both things and keep everything else stock?

@Jowat97 I fail to see any disadvantages at all. A login cookie will be 100% optional. You will be able to use the app exactly like it was intended. Adding an optional login has no effect on the privacy benefits of NewPipe if you opt out of using it.

Am I missing something?

Just wanted to say this is perfect for my use case. I don't need to comment, like, or anything else. I just need a mobile YT replacement that will let me see my recommendations, and sub feed.

Sorry for the bump; just wanted to show support for the idea. :)

Another convenience of being able to have a "minimal login" would also be being able to access and edit playlist, especially Watch Later. Right now the original YouTube app is unfortunately still required because of this, but if Newpipe implemented a functionality such as that I'd uninstall it in a flash.

To the people saying that this is against privacy and what Newpipe stands for: you can just ignore the feature, you won't be required to login in, so I don't see why be against this?

Would prefer Piped login and fees feature. More private than using a google account.
