Moving on from this. Javascript seems over the top for such a small feature (and hyphenator is even regarded by its creator as a temporary patch until CSS3 hyphenation happens).

Have added hyphens/-webkit-hyphens/-moz-hyphens:auto to the CSS, although they may not do anything without any instructions about how to hyphenate words (using @hyphenate-resource, although the format for those dictionaries seems to be up in the air at the moment). Should look at this again when/if CSS3 hyphen support becomes wider.
