What is a Summer of Code?

Summer of Code is a unique model of internship that was initiated by Google through its Google Summer of Code (GSoC) program. Many more SoCs like Summer of KDE (SoK), Ruby Summer of Code etc. are in place today. We at PES Open Source conduct a SoC every year, on very similar lines to GSoC.

How do we function?

  1. We start by collecting ideas from the community and open applications for potential mentors to help guide the project. You can find all details regarding this here - Idea/Mentor Submission Details
  2. We announce the accepted projects and their respective mentors on our github repo for PES SoC 2014
  3. We give a break of 2 to 3 weeks for students interact with the mentors of the projects they are interested in.
  4. After the interaction period is over, we accept student application. You can find all the details of the student application process here - Student Application Process Details.
  5. After the student application period, we select the students who best qualify to work on the project they have proposed for, either solo or the team. Each project gets 1 accepted application.
  6. The coding period spans for a little over two months, from June to (including) August.
  7. During the program, each project will undergo two evaluations, completing which, the project is deemed successful. You can find all the details of the evaluation process here - Project Evaluation Process.
