There may be ways to encourage members of the community to become more active:

  1. Add a calendar widget.
Similar to buildpacks.io, we could add a calendar widget indicating upcoming meetings that members of the paketo community can attend. Even though there is currently only one meeting, there may be more weekly meetings in the future. It would be nice to have a place where users can see a snapshot

  2. Add a shout-outs section
We can highlight members who have contributed to the Paketo Buildpacks projects directly on website.

Over the past several days I have done a relatively comprehensive survey of the community pages of other Cloud Native projects. This include all of the websites of projects that are either in incubation or have graduated from the CNCF. On the whole are website had almost everything that the majority of the CNCF projects had on their community pages present on out own community page.

If there is anything that I might recommend we add it would be a direct link to the Community repository for the Paketo project as well as a link to our YouTube page.

Calendar widgets were relatively uncommon but maybe something interesting to add. Currently we have two community meetings the general Paketo Working Group meeting and the Java specific Working Group meeting. I think if we kept this number of meetings we could get away without a calendar widget however, if we foresee ourselves expanding the number and type of meetings that we have in the future, such as other language family specific working group meetings or office hours, it might behoove us to have a more comprehensive place on our website to layout these meeting.

If we do nothing else I think that we could encourage more people to come to the Working Group meeting by making it a more prominent section on our community page. Currently it is in a paragraph at the bottom of the page. Moving the Working Group section closer to the top of the page would help us get across the type of meeting that it is and make people more interested.

As for a shoutouts section, I did see cases where there was basically a wall of committers. Adding something like that might help us engage more with the community and help establish a sense of pride with committing to the buildpacks projects but sections like this were more rare than common. I think this might be a nice further down the line.

Now that we're talking about paketo-buildpacks/community#88, the calendar widget might be more worth adding.
