Can I display heading level numbers in {contents}?

I am using the {contents} directive to generate chapter headings.

Is it possible to display heading level numbers here as well as in the right sidebar navigation?

Use Case:
I may have a verbal exchange with a questioner, "I have a question about 7.1.1.3," and I want to immediately call up the relevant body of the question.
It would be very useful to have an expanded table of contents with numbered headings.

Currently:

• The table of contents in the right sidebar is collapsed, so it is difficult to find a specific heading there. (Unless there is a way to easily open the collapsed table of contents.)
• The table of contents in the {contents} directive has all the headings expanded, but without the heading level numbers.
