Add Dialyzer specs to major public functions

I started some work on this, but my understanding of dialyzer is limited, and the error messages didn't make it clear to me how to fix existing issues, or whether the problem was with the spec or the code. Someone who understands Dialyzer could help with this and ideally teach me a bit about it!
