reformulation of merge_solid routine

The algorithm here is less than perfect, at present it does almost the same as the old routine, but seems (from its console logging) to do otherwise.
We need to change this into a real round robin.

At present it suffers from the same problem as the original one that merging all objects all at once can be prohibitively memory intensive.
