Command Line Options

XyGrib [-Ini:\<key>=\<value>] [-n] [-sw] [\<filename>]

  • -n, do not automatically open the latest grib file on startup
  • -sw, opens with window shifted slightly since the last opening (so multiple launches don't all appear on top of each other)
  • <filename>, open the specified grib file on startup, or the last opened grab if no filename specified

Valid Ini file keys include:

  • appLanguage, value is one of: ar, cz, de, es, fi, fr, gr, he, it, nl, pl, pt, ru, e (default)

Basic Usage

Navigating around the map

  • Click Left mouse button to drag out a selection area.

This selection area can automatically display a great-circle arc (Menu:Earth -> Great circle distance). Once selected, you can zoom into this area by clicking the selected zone zoom button from the toolbar.

  • Shift-Left mouse button will let you drag out the selection area and automatically zoom into it, when you release the mouse after dragging out the selection area.

  • Control-Left mouse button lets you pan around the map. On a Mac this is Command-Left.

  • Page-up / Page-down shifts one time unit in the future or back.

Using the new GRIB download facility

XyGrib now downloads GRIB files on the fly from a new server run by openGribs.org.

There is a choice of 3 Global models for atmospheric data and a separate choice of 3 wave models. It is possible to set either to "None" if only atmospheric or only wave data is needed.

Functions in Detail

File

  • Open (ctrl+O) a GRIB file stored in a local folder.
  • Close (ctrl+W) the GRIB file you are looking at.
  • New instance (ctrl+shift+N) If the first instance is not in full screen, the new instance is slightly shifted.
  • Download GRIB file (ctrl+D) for the defined zone. This open a window were you can choose the model and the variables you want. The size is limited to 50 MB (estimation based on the size of the defined zone). The real size of downloaded file is generaly smaller.
  • GRIB server status (ctrl+R) Allow you to know date and time of data available on the server.
  • File information (ctrl+I) Describe the details (date and content) of the open GRIB file.
  • Create animation (ctrl+A) with all the data stored in the GRIB file, one image for each time available. You can then save them in a local folder and if you wish make a little video using for instance ffmpeg.
  • Save current image (ctrl+S)
  • Quit (ctrl+Q)
