Integration with obsidian-dataview for Task Completion Events

Does anyone know if there's some way to have obsidian-dataview's TASK-type query integrate with the features from this plugin? Mainly, the thing I need is for reoccurring tasks to work, i.e. the duplication of a task above the previous with an updated date whenever one is completed. This functionality is broken through the dataview render.

This is the one thing keeping me from being able to use Obsidian for tasks, provided I have my choice of using dataview. So just reaching out where I think I can. The functionality of this plugin is great, but there is a certain lack of flexibility against dataview.

Is this an issue best addressed by this project's development or by dataview's? In the meantime, even a temporary hack I can implement, or some suggestion for a 3rd party option would be appreciated.

I haven't attempted it myself, but I believe that you might accomplish your goal by using the Buttons plugin to execute Tasks' "Tasks: Toggle task done" command within a Dataview table.

If you succeed in getting this to work, please share what you come up with here.

"Plain" dataview is not able to have recurring tasks, as that is part of Tasks logic, which DataView doesn't trigger.

Maybe we can approach the topic from another angle, @tristonlees. What flexibility are you missing from the Tasks plugin?

I think one important feature would be consistency of formats between dataview and tasks.

Dataview is not for the faint of heart, but it's much better than, say, Logseq's Datalog/Datascript query interface - at least for now.
OTOH, as @schemar points out, Tasks adds some absolutely vital functionality that Dataview lacks.

As I see it, where Dataview and Tasks make contact is in the format of attributes of tasks. One change that would be quite significant, I think, is if Tasks used Dataview's syntax for task attributes - i.e., [variable:: value]. Tasks's short mode could reduce the attributes to icons. This would at least allow for Dataview queries to be formed using its full power.

Dataview, OTOH, would have to find some way to accommodate changing those attributes (e.g., adding a completion date), and should probably support at least all the attributes that Tasks does. Either that, or Dataview could just straight out support all the attributes Tasks provides.
I should note I don't know anything about DataviewJS, but it seems possible to me that it might support database "updates" if it's really in JS.

I suspect any effort to make Tasks and Dataview play nicely would require a very onerous effort by the devs, and I fully understand if this is beyond their resources at this time.

Ultimately, though, both Tasks and Dataview appear poised to become essential components of Obsidian. It would be wonderful if they could play off each other.

The attributes for DataView are at the Note level not at the line, heading, task level.

This would mean they apply to all tasks in that note, which could be handy in the case you have a note per project and then all the tasks can have a custom indicator applied.

What particular format consistency are you talking about, do you mean returning a table format instead of a list format?

@sytone, I'm just a noob with dataview, but I thought one could pull individual tasks from a note. If I've got that right, then I thought one could then filter those results using inline attributes, like [var:: val].

You can but in DataView the attributes used by it name:: value are at the page or note level so if you had 20 tasks on the page the attributes would be the same for all of them.

In this plugin you can add a set of pre-defined attributes around date, priority, etc as well as using tags. So, you can possibly use tags to apply the attributes you want.
