There is a plan to eventually fix this behavior, but that plan has been on the shelf for years now, so who knows when it might arrive.
Would you happen to have a link to a relevant GitHub issue, mailing list thread or similar resource detailing the plan? If so, would it be possible to add it to the text? I assume I'm not the only person curious about this :) And if it's a GitHub issue, I'd like to subscribe, so as to follow the discussion.

Thanks! I'd found that issue, but I wasn't sure if it was the right one, since you'd said the plan had been on the shelf "for years", and the issue has only been opened since last fall. But AFAICS from the thread and your last reply to it, it's the idea that has been floating around for quite some time, whereas this is just the last attempt at getting it implemented? Well fingers crossed then :)
