ZuckerBlock : a hosts file to consider. #55
Comments
Nice work. However we already have https://github.com/jmdugan/blocklists/blob/master/corporations/facebook/all, wouldn't your list be redundant? |
Hi, Thank-you. Some, most definitely. Both of the lists are released using a Public Domain license - CC0 - and I've approached the maintainer of that list regarding incorporating domains from each list into the other, in order to pull in domains from each list to the other, e.g. pull in Giphy (& other) domains into that list which it doesn't include & on my end to pull in additional facebook & instagram domains.
**Edit** `2020-06-12T12:18:50+00:00`
After having pulled in additional hosts from "No Facebook", I discovered an entry for `watchdog.energized.pro`, a subdomain belonging to the maintainer of the "Energized" lists. This is problematic on three fronts: the blocking of said host; the inclusion of said host and variations thereof in the various "Energized" lists, apparently as some sort of method to trace who incorporates any of the "Energized" lists; Licensing issues: "No Facebook" is Licensed under `CC0` which is incompatible with "Energized"'s `MIT` License, which "requir[es] preservation of copyright and license notices" despite allowing variations to be licensed under differing terms. It's a subtle (and poorly worded) yet important and easily misinterpreted clause.
Additionally, ZuckerBlock is now self-hosted at
https://iosprivacy.com/zuckerblock/ZuckerBlock.hosts
- note that I am using a differing naming convention for the ZuckerBlock hosts file to make its format easily recognizable by name only.

Hello again! Here's one more for consideration. I only finished compiling it a few days ago, hence its lack of "stars". In theory it should block every digital property owned by Facebook LLC, including Giphy and Libra. I'm sure it is incomplete just like any other hosts file and that it will evolve as both myself and others discover not yet included hosts, those that need not be included, as well as digital properties yet to be acquired by Facebook LLC.
I hope it may be of use either in its entirety or in part. I've purposefully Licensed it to allow for reuse in any way.
nextdns/services#6
Edit: Moved development to GitLab as it simplifies my workflow. Here's the repo:
https://gitlab.com/intr0/zuckerblock
& the raw hosts file:
https://gitlab.com/intr0/zuckerblock/-/raw/master/ZuckerBlock.hosts
&&
https://iosprivacy.com/zuckerblock/ZuckerBlock.hosts
=> updated v2.20.7.1;
Each entry via self discovery;
Goal changed to blocking main FB properties/services.
