I thought there was already an issue for this, but can't seem to find it. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, I have a suggested way to do this, which I've outlined elsewhere (and made a proof-of-concept branch a while ago).

It needs a bit of re-thinking in parts. I'll put a proper proposed solution up here once we start down this path.
