Hard to say. I mean, even if we watch touch events and trigger when a finger is held down over an area... it's still triggering something that's mostly under someone's finger, which seems non-ideal.
I honestly don't see the point - it's a highlight that's supposed to help w/ navigating with a pointing device. If that device is your finger, you don't need navigational help.
You can, however, make the highlighted area stay highlighted (the alwaysOn property) after clicking/touching, if you need visual feedback for history.
