.... which breaks this script. I'll see if I can get it working 'by hand' and make a pull request if I get it working.

Yep, since version 1.17.1 GStreamer/gst-python@03fc4a2 they dropped support for autogen tools.
Have u succeeded in porting the build script to meson?
