  • Description:
New imagery is needed for some areas of Salima District, Malawi. We are setting up a project with UNICEF to map road network. Unfortunately the image quality is bad in some parts of the district. We are aiming to set up the project by 16th March. Assistance with imagery would be very appreciated. Best source of current imagery appears to be Bing.

  • Wiki link: This is a HOT project not an activation. The project will improve the efficiency of all Unicef projects in Malawi. Currently logistics and planning are a challenge due to absence of road network information. Suppliers and project leads cannot meet expected timelines, and prices for transport/delivery are very unpredictable. The aim is to create road map network data for the whole of Malawi, starting with Salima District as a pilot. Better road data will enable better estimation, cost and project management for all Unicef projects in Malawi.

  • Issue with current imagery quality:

    • Clouds
    • Blank tiles (no imagery)
    • Black and white imagery
    • Outdated imagery
    • Other: can't zoom to sufficient detail
  • Level of urgency:

    • Low
    • Medium
    • High
  • Requirement of Post imagery:

  • Yes
  • No

@RebeccaFirthy Thanks for opening an issue here on github. I added the geojson from Slack into a gist: https://gist.github.com/smit1678/57140ddc1ff972a0eb07e3dba92e19b1.

Can you post a few more details about the project? What's the purpose of tracing roads and how will the better road data be used?

Looking at other existing sources

I also started comparing other existing sources of imagery to see if there is a source beyond Bing that can be used immediately:

It looks like the global layer from Digital Globe may be an option with sufficient coverage across that region.

Adding the answer so that it is available outside of slack.

Imagery providery by HIU back in 2015 after the floods:

For the task available at http://tasks.teachosm.org/ ; searching for Salima

@vdeparday Excellent, thanks for finding that. That imagery covers a majority of the western part of the AOI. 👌

Looks like task #1239 also has an HIU service in that area as well: http://hiu-maps.net/hot/1.0.0/maganga-10oct2014-flipped/{z}/{x}/{y}.png. I would say the above salima-2015 link is best since it is more recent and has wider coverage.

@RebeccaFirthy Can you get started with this imagery: http://hiu-maps.net/hot/1.0.0/salima-2015-flipped/{z}/{x}/{y}.png?
