Replace the manual guidance of the robot with the ability to follow a hand-held ultrasonic transducer (transmitter). This will require multiple ultrasonic receivers around the body of the robot to enable the direction of the sound to be quickly deduced.
The resulting activity should be constrained by the same safe driving algorithms as the manual control.
