What we've been doing

Its been a busy month, but in short, based on our last meeting, we did all of 'what we need to do', so that's great!

We held our feedback workshops/survey, and I just sent around a preliminary write up. I am going to think of next steps for using this information in the coming week and then in conjunction with a possibly interactive summary diagram where people can provide further discussion/prioritisation, share some proposed actions to the broader group for discussion hopefully leading to an agreed plan for our next development phase. Something like that.

What we discussed

• We (Geoff, Shirley and I) received a notification yesterday that our Docker free team plan was being 'sunsetted', with a 30-day window to get things in order. The path forwards was to apply to join the [Docker-Sponsored Open Source Program] --- that was an action item.
• Geoff and I will be presenting at our 1000 City Challenge introduction webinars, and so discussed our plan for slides to share with group on 17 March; Geoff will present the first, I will present the second. Proposed content for presentation is:
  • Knowledge/skills that would be useful
  • Overview of the key steps involved
  • What you will get out of it: generated data, report and scorecard; training and skills gained
  • Upcoming training sessions
• OSMnx can query timestamp via Overpass, as per discussion at Should be able to construct pedestrian network from file without using Overpass #158; we can trial implementation
• We discussed possibility of piece-wise intersection consolidation to account for spatial variation in urban form (as per City-specific tolerance parameters for cleaning/consolidating intersections should be allowed #138); that is an open challenge, but we agreed in principle that one achievable solution to this in some settings will be to allow for custom import of intersection data, rather than derive this from OpenStreetMap.
  • In general, it will be good to make allowances for user data to be provided as an option
    • currently this is possible for POIs and population, but in principle could be done for areas of open space, road network and urban area / additional covariates. By allowing this, we can also potentially allow for impact evaluation of hypothetical scenarios, where users modify data to represent an intervention and evaluate resulting changes in built environment measures/indicators. This is of high value to some of our users who wish to evaluate interventions.
• We agreed that more video tutorial content should be prioritised, including
  • How to configure datasets and regions
  • sourcing and configuring GTFS data
• Following our meeting, I shared an e-mail announcing a funding call for AWS that could support development of a pilot indicator portal for the Global Observatory of Healthy and Sustainable Cities. I suggested we could first prototype this as a locally delivered solution (ie. part of Docker container, users run web map in their browser to inspect results interactively), and if successful with bid, we could trial a serverless implementation on AWS.

What we need to to

• Following the meeting I submitted our application to join the Dock-Sponsored Open Source Program; this was actually processed quite quickly, and we were accepted. We will have to apply again in the coming year, which should be fine given we are a non-commercial open source project.
• Share feedback workshop and survey preliminary results with team
• Geoff and I will meet to plan 1000 Cities challenge webinar presentation for the spatial/software team
• Update OSMnx network generation to use OpenStreetMap publication_date parameter as per Should be able to construct pedestrian network from file without using Overpass #158
• Create video snippets
• Curate playlist of video snippets
• Insert video snippets into instruction material website
• investigate submission for AWS grant to pilot GOHSC web portal
