If you have let's say 4 slotted crates connected to each other you can see what is in them by right clicking any of the crates. You have one hopper to feed items to one crates on the left. If you want to take items with a hopper (or other item transport method from mods like conveyance, simple pipes, etc) from one of the other crates you simply can't. you have to use the one being filled by the fisrt hopper. In short, even if the inventory seems to be shared between crates for a player it doesn't work with a hopper.

Thank you for the issue report. I'm not sure I expect slotted crates to behave this way for export by hoppers.
The could, but the problem will be performance for very large crate multi-blocks because of how hoppers work. (They scan every single slot every tick, if I recall correctly.)
Will leave this issue open for a while though in case some solution occurs to me.
