Adaptable is based upon the popular BCU theme, developed for Coventry University. Since the main developer decided to leave the project, I (Gareth) was asked to assist in maintenance and improvements. Coventry University has now moved away from Moodle and passed the project onto me to manage as its lead. I will keep the theme alive, maintained and supported for as long as there is a willingness to fund my time to do so. The theme is complex and takes time, skill, knowledge and talent to develop. This is why I'm asking for your financial support in my endeavours.
If you would like to sponsor me, get support or fund improvements, then please do get in touch via:
- gMail eMail | gjbarnard at gMail dt com.
- My website eMail | contact at gjbarnard dt co dt uk.
- GitHub | Please outline your issue / improvement on 'Adaptable issues'.

By becoming a sponsor you help to keep the theme alive and working as underlying technologies change and the core Moodle software moves forward. In return I’ll provide you access to additional functionality for the theme and prioritise questions from sponsors through a sponsors only area on GitHub.
Sponsorship is not support or a contract to provide such, nor is it a commitment to provide updates, future versions or improvements. What it is though is an incentive to me to keep the theme going and maintained, and intend to do so for as long as possible.
How much you offer for sponsorship is up to you to decide and for us to then agree upon based upon the use and value of the theme to you. Sponsorship can be a one off payment or many payments over time, the choice is yours.
Please contact me using the details above along with how much you'd like to offer and an outline of who you are and how much you use the theme. I will then outline the steps that need to be taken so that you can become a sponsor. Note that I can only do business to business transactions.
Adaptable is already a complicated theme and therefore I am reluctant to add any major features, indeed my aim is to reduce the complexity without actually removing functionality. There is though the possibility of improving what is already there and / or creating a child theme that adds the specific functionality that you require.
If you would like your own customised version or a new child theme of Boost / Classic, then typically with a setting and a few style changes this is usually two to three hours work. At my current rate this will be between 94 and 141 GBP. I charge by the minute with a minimum time of fifteen. Please contact me for further details with an outline of what you would like.
As Adaptable is licensed under the GNU GPLv3 License it comes with NO support, please see 'COPYING.txt'. If you would like support from me then I'm happy to provide it for a fee (please see my contact details below). Otherwise, the Moodle 'Themes' forum is an excellent place to ask questions.
Adaptable can be obtained from:
You have all the rights granted to you by the GPLv3 license. If you are unsure about anything, then the FAQ - GPL FAQ - is a good place to look.
If you reuse any of the code then I kindly ask that you make reference to the theme.
If you make improvements or bug fixes then I would appreciate if you would send them back to me by forking from GitHub and doing a 'Pull Request' so that the rest of the Moodle community benefits.
This version works with Moodle 4.5 version 2024100700.00 (Build: 20241007) and above within the MOODLE_405_STABLE branch until the next release.
Please ensure that your hardware and software complies with 'Requirements' in 'Installing Moodle'.
See 'Known issues with this version' in 'Changes.md' for the version you are running.
Before reporting an issue, please ensure that you are running the current version for the major release of Moodle you are using. It is essential that you are operating the required version of Moodle as stated above, this is because the theme relies on core functionality that is out of its control.
If you think you've discovered a genuine bug with the theme then please look at the Moodle Themes forum first to see if it has already been repoted. Secondly, look at GitHub.
I operate a policy that I will fix all genuine issues in 'my' (not other developers of the theme) code, when fully described and replicatable.
It is essential that you provide as much information as possible, the critical information being the contents of the theme's version.php file / or the top of the 'Information' settings tab. Other version information such as specific Moodle version, theme name and version also helps. A screen shot can be really useful in visualising the issue along with any files you consider to be relevant.
You can use either the 'Themes forum' or 'GitHub'.
