Data Hosting Centres

Table of Contents

Introduction

A data hosting centre (DHC) can provide you with an account on their IPT, allowing you to manage your own datasets, and publish them through GBIF.org.

Using a DHC is highly recommended because it will save you time and money setting up your own IPT instance, and you can receive helpdesk support in your own language.

Please use this page to discover a trusted DHC by country or by theme that is right for you. If no appropriate DHC exists, or the DHC doesn't reply promptly to your inquiry, please contact the GBIF Helpdesk for assistance.

Please note that to qualify as a trusted DHC, the centre must meet a strict set of criteria. Like so, you can trust the DHC will keep their IPT online near 100% of the time, and they will ensure that your dataset gets backed-up.

Data Hosting Centre Criteria

A DHC must meet the following set of strict requirements in order to be recommended to publishers:

  • Their IPT is online near 100% of the time
  • They can properly administer their IPT:
    • Keeping it up-to-date with latest version
    • Ensuring the IPT data directory gets regularly backed-up
    • Managing user accounts
    • Managing IPT cores and extensions
  • They have a proven track-record of hosting data for publishers in their country
  • They can provide prompt and knowledgeable helpdesk support:
    • They know how to use the IPT to publish data through GBIF.org
    • They know about biodiversity data standards in general
    • They know how to publish data papers

If you believe your DHC meets these standards, and would like to offer your services to publishers in your country, please email [email protected].

Data Hosting Centres by Theme

Data Hosting Centres by Country

Designates a country with an IPT serving as a repository, able to assign DOIs to datasets underlying scientific publications in journals such as Scientific Data.

Australia

The Atlas of Living Australia provides helpdesk support to new publishers in Australia, and hosting support for datasets on the ALA IPT. Please contact ALA [email protected] for assistance.

The ALA IPT is recognized as a repository in BioSharing.org. An increasing number of journals refer authors to an appropriate repository in BioSharing.org in order to ensure data underlying scientific publications gets deposited in a standardized manner.

Belgium

The Belgium Biodiversity Platform provides helpdesk support to publishers in Belgium and hosting support for datasets on the Belgian BIF IPT. Please contact André Heughebaert [email protected] for assistance. The Belgian Biodiversity platform shares their IPT with the following organisations:

The Belgian Biodiversity Platform also hosts an IPT for each of these countries/institutions:

The Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO) also provides IPT hosting support for datasets originating from the Flemish region. The INBO is sharing their IPT instance with these organisations:

The Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) is hosting a server with multiple IPT installations for VLIZ, OBIS & EMODnet Biology at http://ipt.vliz.be. Publishers of marine data should refer to the section [Marine Data|dataHostingCentres#marine-data].

Canada

The Canadian Biodiversity Information Facility (CBIF) does not run an IPT.

Therefore you are recommended to contact Canadensys, which provides helpdesk support to new publishers in Canada, and hosting support for datasets on the Canadensys IPT. Please contact Canadensys [email protected] for assistance.

The Canadensys IPT is recognized as a repository in BioSharing.org. An increasing number of journals refer authors to an appropriate repository in BioSharing.org in order to ensure data underlying scientific publications gets deposited in a standardized manner.

Colombia

The Colombian Biodiversity Information System (SiB Colombia) provides helpdesk support to new publishers in Colombia, and hosting support for datasets on the SiB Colombia IPT. Please contact SiB Colombia [email protected] for assistance.

The SiB Colombia IPT is recognized as a repository in BioSharing.org. An increasing number of journals refer authors to an appropriate repository in BioSharing.org in order to ensure data underlying scientific publications gets deposited in a standardized manner.

Denmark

The Danish Biodiversity Information Facility (DanBIF) provides helpdesk support to new publishers in Denmark, and hosting support for datasets on the DanBIF IPT. Please contact DanBIF [email protected] for assistance.

Finland

The Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility (FinBIF) provides helpdesk support to new publishers in Finland, and hosting support for datasets on the Digitarium IPT. Please contact the Digitarium [email protected] for assistance.

France

GBIF France provides helpdesk support to new publishers in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, France, Madagascar, and Togo. GBIF France also hosts an IPT for each of these countries:

Please contact GBIF-France [email protected] for assistance. For technical issues please write to [email protected] instead.

Norway

GBIF Norway provides helpdesk support to new publishers in Norway, and hosting support for datasets on the GBIF Norway IPT. Please contact GBIF Norway [email protected] for assistance.

Portugal

GBIF Portugal provides helpdesk support to new publishers in Portugal, and hosting support for datasets on the GBIF Portugal IPT. Please contact GBIF Portugal [email protected] for assistance.

South Africa

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) provides helpdesk support to new publishers in South Africa, and hosting support for datasets on the SANBI IPT. Please contact [email protected] for assistance.

Spain

GBIF Spain provides helpdesk support to new publishers in Spain, and hosting support for datasets on the GBIF Spain IPT. Please contact [email protected] for assistance.

The GBIF Spain IPT is recognized as a repository in BioSharing.org. An increasing number of journals refer authors to an appropriate repository in BioSharing.org in order to ensure data underlying scientific publications gets deposited in a standardized manner.

Sweden

GBIF Sweden provides helpdesk support to new publishers in Sweden, and hosting support for datasets on the GBIF Sweden IPT. Please contact Anders Telenius [email protected] for assistance.

Taiwan

The Taiwan Biodiversity Information Facility (TaiBIF) provides helpdesk support to new publishers in Taiwan, and hosting support for datasets on the TaiBIF IPT. Please contact Yu-Huang Wang [email protected] for assistance.

USA

The iDigBio IPT provides helpdesk support to new data publishers in the US, and data publishing resources for datasets needing data mobilization support. Please contact the Joanna McCaffrey at [email protected] for assistance.

VertNet provides helpdesk support to new publishers in the US, with a special focus on vertebrate collections and observations data. Publishers of vertebrate data should refer to the section Vertebrate Data.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) provides helpdesk support to new publishers in the United States partnered or affiliated with the USGS or the U.S. Federal Government, and hosting support for datasets on the USGS BISON IPT. Vertebrate data

VertNet provides data hosting and helpdesk support to publishers of vertebrate collections and observations data. Currently it helps to mobilize collections from 38 countries. It offers data hosting support on the VertNet IPT. Please contact David Bloom [email protected] for assistance.

Certification

By becoming certified, repositories can demonstrate to both their users and their funders that an independent authority has evaluated them and endorsed their trustworthiness. The World Data System (WDS) and the Data Seal of Approval (DSA) have merged their data repository certifications into a set of harmonized common requirements for certification of repositories named the Core Trustworthy Data Repositories (Core TDR) Requirements. The Core certification requires a data repository supply evidence that they are sustainable and trustworthy. A repository first conducts an internal self-assessment, which is then reviewed by community peers. More information about the certification process can be found here.
