It would be nice to be able to call the xaqt API and supply it source file names or the stringified source code. Also, it would be nice to be able to supply resource files that the user's source file could read/write.

cool! i did some work on this yesterday and it is pretty much done (currently on n-user-files branch), there are still some details i'd like to iron out before opening a PR. I'll keep you posted 📮

@ConnorWalsh Tangentially, talked to @frenata a bit about it on the phone but I know you were worried about reinventing the wheel a while back, you might look into 'online judges' as a category of service, turns out that's what we've been building (or building a part of). DMOJ is a big open source one.
