Context
In ERT2 there is a concept named workflows. These allow for great flexibility for our users. At the same time experience shows that they are difficult to use.
Suggested direction
For ERT3 the current suggestion is that we introduce context specific stages that supports the tasks of ERT2 workflows, namely ensemble and analysis stages. Ensemble stages can be executed before or after the forward model and be work on the input and output records of the ensemble. An ensemble stage should hence make this natural. Observe that in contrast to an ERT2 workflow an ensemble stage will not have access to the relevant ensemble data on a shared disk, but instead as transmitted records that can be manipulated.
Similarly an analysis stage should be possible to run before or after an algorithm step; for instance a data assimilation algorithm. It might be that these stages should be further contextualised by the type of experiment being executed (experiment, sensitivity, history matching or optimisation).
The data flow, configuration and creation of these stages would highly benefit from some initial design and thinking.
